Chick Picks Week 3

Big Upsets by PAC 12 teams get national attention as UCLA, Oregon State, and Arizona defeat three of the AP Top 20…
Oregon State received Big 10 attention last Saturday as they welcomed No. 13 ranked Wisconsin Badgers (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) to Reser Stadium – the first visit by a Big 10 team in the past 40 years. It may be another 40 before a Big 10 wants to come back as OSU outgained the Badgers 354-207 and handed them their first non-conference loss of the season.
This matchup was scoreless until Sophomore Trevor Romaine punched a 43-yard field goal through to put the Beavers (1-0, 0-0 Pac 12) up 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter.Six minutes into the third sophomore QB Sean Mannion hit Brandon Cooks with a 20 yard touchdown pass to put the Beavs up 10-0. This was the only time Oregon State made it into the red zone the entire game as the Badger defense held them to just 354 yards of total offense. Mannion finished the day 29 of 47 for 276 yards and 1 TD. Markus Wheaton added eight catches for 87 yards, and Cooks finished the day six for 80.

Now it’s time to talk about the Defense.  The Beavers D forced the Badgers to punt 6 times the first two quarters of the game; the second half they forced two turnovers. The Black & Orange D was blitzing from all angles, forcing one interception and sacking QB Danny O’Brien three times. The Badgers were scoreless until the last 90 seconds of regulation when Junior QB Danny O’Brien connected with Jacob Pederson for an 11-yard TD to put Wisconsin within three. That was the only highlight of the night for the Red & White as Oregon State came out on top with an impressive 10-7 non-conference win against a top tanked Big 10 team. O’Brien finished the day 20 of 38 for 172 total yards and 1 TD. Standout Running back Montee Ball was held to just 61 yards rushing on the day. Interesting stat about Montee: he’s scored at least one TD in his past 21 consecutive games; but not on this given Saturday as the Badgers finished with 207 yards and only 35 on the ground.

Oregon State broke Montee Balls 21 game TD streak and snapped Wisconsin’s 33-game non-conference winning streak, the longest in the country behind LSU. Their previous con-conference loss dates back to their 2003 season when they were defeated by UNLV.
Next Up: Oregon State has a bye this weekend as they prepare to head down to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to take on No. 22 ranked Bruins of UCLA.
